A
Sinking Feeling
The Dovecote Gallery, Valentines Mansion
9th to 23rd May 2010
‘...Yesterday
an express arrived
with the disagreeable advice
that the Valentine was entirely
gone to pieces so that scarce two
planks of her remained together...’
November
22nd 1779, The St James Chronicle
The first collaboration
between Kathy Taylor and Margaret Duston, A Sinking
Feeling featured sculpture and installation made in
response to an historical event connected to Valentines
Mansion.
The Valentine,
was an armed East Indiaman cargo vessel, owned by
Sir Charles Raymond and named after his home at Valentines
Mansion. On the ship’s return voyage from India,
in 1779 it was wrecked in a storm off the Channel
Island of Sark. The cargo was dispersed, partly salvaged
by locals but the rest lay on the seabed for two hundred
years until a dive team retrieved some of the remains
in the mid 1970’s. |
