In this piece traditional
English afternoon tea is also represented by three
commodities of 18th century trade: sugar, tea and
silver.
The viewer is invited
to make links with an abiding English custom and our
imperial history, and at the same time to witness
the soothing but slightly menacing spectacle taking
place before them.
The teasing caresses
and subtle bullying amidst familiar objects, suggest
both human frailties and the violence that may lurk
within the daily rituals of domestic life.
